One SOUND, one VOICE

Sandra

I need help starting a group in Bowling Green, KY

Hi:) A friend from Los Angeles told me about this web-site and recommended that I post my situation. I teach middle school and in this school of 1,000 students about 100 are Latinos. Our Latino students have a LOW self-esteem:( They view their heritage in a negative way and I believe this effects everything they do. Selling the dream of success and "si se puede" attitude is hard. So, I started a Latino club, to my surprise 72 latino students showed up. From this group 20 students want to start a Folklorico dance group. Which brings me to my NEED - I applied for a grant ($600) from this money I planned to use 300 to buy just a basic skirt for the girls and the boys a basic hat. My friend said that sometimes there are people that are looking to donate their outfits to a good cause. I hope you understand my need. I have to make this group a success for the sake of the kids. Let me know if you are interested in helping me anyway or I will take any advice you can offer. I never danced but I am sure willing to learn! :)

Hi Sandra.

You need to find a place that sells fabric for ($1.00 -1.90) per yard. Also a good seamstress or a mom in the group that would be willing to help with sewing. In my group we have 3 moms. This will stretch money a long way. Also: Decide the regions you want to dance and then see what Item in common all of them have. (A white shirt? or a white blouse with ruffle for girls?) Then you just need different pants or skirts.

Here in LA you can buy a spool of 100 yrds. ribbon for 7 or 8 dollars. Make sure your price is close to that or the same.

Thank you for your response. I had a meeting with parents on Monday night and again it suprises me how are people can come through. Out of the 45 invites I send out 39 families showed up wanted to continue this "Latino Club" for the sake of their kids. They are willing to help. Some said that they would give a service in exchange of paying the clothes. I think that would not be a problem except we need money to buy the material. I still have not heard from the grant people. Partly because the city is at a stand still because of snow. Anyway wish me luck and I'll keep you posted. Believe or not I feel this is something I have to do and it will come together. :)

Hey Sandra,

Sorry this is a little late for a reply, but our store is running a sale on practice skirts and dance shoes until March 31st, 2010. We have a wide selection of colors, sizes, and are always willing to work to conform with your budget. We are always partial to helping new groups, especially childrens groups and school groups. We also have instructional DVDs in English and Spanish that demonstrate many of the dances step-by-step. Those are on sale as well. Please call The Mariachi Connection at 1-877-883-0067 or reply via FolkloricoOnline for more information!

Hope to hear from you soon!

I've just joined the site too and am already impressed with the information available and the willingness of so many members to support others in their efforts. Benny is a great resource and a friend. I know you have likely heard from him already.

I agree with the other commentary. I've had the opportunity to work with several schools and community groups with limited funds. We've always rallied the families to participate in sewing as many of the skirts as possible as well as making accessories like bows, head-pieces, etc. So much can be done with basic fabrics, ribbons, and other fixings. This will take care of your immediate needs. Sounds like you have a motivated crew of parents and that is awesome and will take you a long way in this endeaver.

Down the line, you'd also be surprised at what kinds of things you can find in segundas/second hand strores. Often I've come across sombreros, rebozos, even full costumes!!! Many times people purchase things while traveling or use them as halloween costumes and then get rid of them - in like new condition. You won't find large quantities of course, but every once in awhile you might come across a few gems. This is always good when you may have solo or just a handful performing a special piece.

Best of luck to you! Hope to hear of your successes! Keep me posted :)

Our 99 cent stores have sombrero's around Cinco do Mayo. Go to you local Wal-Mart and ask if you can have a bake sale we sell everything for $1.00 and make approximately $345.00 each time we have one.

Hi
I am the director of a dance/music group in Killeen, Texas, that produces educational material in hi tech formats. over 15 years, we have produced hseet music, vidoeos, and audio files. You can find some of it on youtube at mecatx. We have much material on Mexican Folk Dance, some on Panama, and some on Puerto Rican. We do not chage for these materials, however they are delivered by the internet.
If you are not part of the school system, your groups is elegible to be a 501 C3 organzation/corporation. Demands a fair amount of paper work, but puts you in the running for thousands of free dollars. You can send me your email address, and i can give you more advice.
Also you can communicate with me on ooVoo (a free internet video service). We use it and skype to teach music and dance.
