I'm looking for a list of stores and businesses who sell Mexican Folklore costumes, footwear, supplies and music. I have use the following stores; Mariachi Connection, La Rosa Supply, and Miquelitos. If anyone out there has a list of stores or websites that they have use to purchase costumes, please forward them to me.
I think is it better to make your own when possible. You get much better quality and usually it costs less. Simplicity patterns http://www.simplicity.com/ has 2 out of print folklorico costume patterns that you can still buy off their website. They have a women’s Jalisco dress #3858 and a girls skirt and blouse #3863. I adapted a pajama pants pattern to make my and my daughter’s bloomers and customize with lace and ribbon. A poodle skirt pattern is great for making costumes or practice skirts by adding a ruffle. Just remember that most skirts are made with 2 circles, so you will need to double the amount of fabric needed. The ruffles should be 1 ½ times the circumference of the skirt; usually this is about 16 yards. Try to buy patterns and fabric on sale, to save even more and ribbons and lace are much less expensive if you buy a whole roll than by the yard. You don’t have to be an expert seamstress to make the costumes.
Thank you for your information. I do sew and have made 2 dresses. I ended up paying almost the same as a dress already made. I have found 2 streamstress, but charge too much. But I glad to know that Simplicity has patterns. I have made bloomers and blouses.
I have budget I need to stick to for the program's costumes, that's why I looking to see what works for our program.
Thanks for your help.
That’s great! Another suggestion is to buy large rolls of fabric. You can usually get it cheaper and then you have enough for a lot of dresses in the same color (if that’s what you want). The solid color fabrics will be less expensive than prints. Also go for the lighter weight poly cotton poplin to keep the dresses from getting too heavy. Our group makes our little girls Chiapas dresses using a medium sized floral print on a black background trimmed with ribbon. The design is a basic blouse with a ruffle (the blouse is black fabric and the ruffle is the print) and a double circle skirt. When we have a seamstress make them, the cost is about $75. This is a lot less than the purchased costume, is easily made and washable.
Hi Sara, I am trying to make my daughter's Jalisco dress but cannot find the pattern. Do you know anyone that has instructions/pattern? I know you can use a poodle skirt pattern for the falda, but what about the blusa? Gracias!
Check out the posts on Alegria. There are some great ideas on how to make a dress, using a cheerleader top pattern (modified of course). Look at the Simplicity website costume patterns. Another idea is to use a dress as a sample and make a out of that, if you have access to a dress.
